About Gianmaria De Luca
Gianmaria De Luca is an Italian artist and photographer who experiments with a wide range of techniques creating installations and large-scale photographic prints. He was born in Rome, Italy, in 1988, and began his practice off the beaten track, assisting teachers at Rome’s Institute of Photography and working with one of the most prestigious print studios in Rome, Fotogramma 24, where his curiosity and knack for photography would see him mentored by master photographers such as Claudio Abate. His work spans fine art to reportage photography, experimental installations and work with notable artists and masters of costume and set design, journalism, and filmmaking. He has exhibited globally throughout Italy, Northern Ireland, Germany, Switzerland and Australia.
Gianmaria’s artistic research is rooted in age-old techniques like the camera obscura and cyanotype, and experimentation with light painting, colour, composition, and symbolism. Through these methods, he maintains a constant dialogue with his environment producing work that is endlessly in progress, and realized purely for the sake of learning and sharing with his audience.
The pandemic brought him back to Rome in 2020 after many years of travelling and working across the world. It was here that his latest project “Camera Obscura - Roma” was brought to life. He began with the installation of several large-scale camera obscuras in hidden locations throughout the city to shoot irreplicable negatives of the Roman skyline. The most ambitious of these installations was realized on the rooftop of the Santa Maria in Vallicella church, also known as Chiesa Nuova, where he shot three, impeccably detailed, 9 by 5 m negatives of Rome. His other camera oscura installations were realized during residencies with the MACRO Asilo and the Museo dell'Altro e dell'Altrove di Metropoliz (MAAM) museums, as well a theatre performance with the Studi Internazionali per la Sicilia (SIS) in Palermo, Sicily.

La ricerca artistica di Gianmaria De Luca nasce da un desiderio di comprensione della realtà insoddisfatto. La sorpresa continua generata dalla consapevolezza che il momento dello scatto sia soltanto un passaggio effimero tra la creazione di un immaginario e un altro ha portato De Luca a scegliere la fotografia come medium di espressione privilegiato ma non assoluto. In quell’istante, infatti, il fotografo crea una comunione tra il mondo circostante, i soggetti ritratti e il suo modo di percepire la realtà che è unico e irripetibile; per questo ritiene che non si possano mai considerare le fotografie come opere isolate e scevre dal contesto che le ha generate. Allo stesso tempo, lo studio delle diverse tecniche di stampa fotografica, dalla cianotipia al transfert, accompagna costantemente il lavoro creativo dell’artista che mira a innovare il proprio percorso e a scoprire nuovi modi di esprimersi.
Del resto, per realizzare una fotografia, De Luca usa spesso procedimenti che mirano a riprendere solo ciò che accade di fronte alla lente come il light painting e l’esposizione multipla rinunciando all’ausilio di ritocchi digitali al fine di esaltare tutte le potenzialità di suggestione della realtà nel momento della rappresentazione. La luce, i costumi, l’ambientazione e i personaggi sono reali ma acquistano un valore quasi onirico una volta immortalati sulla pellicola.
Nato a Roma nel 1988, mescola le influenze della tradizione artistica italiana con l’ispirazione che trae dalle altre culture e dai suoi continui viaggi. I suoi lavori spaziano dal fotogiornalismo alle foto d’arte, dalle installazioni alle collaborazioni con altri artisti famosi, costumisti e set designer fino alla direzione di filmati. Le sue opere sono state esposte in molti paesi tra i quali Italia, Irlanda del Nord, Germania, Svizzera e Australia.
