En plein air

“En plein air” began in an rustic Venetian bar across from the Teatro la Fenice in Venice, Italy where Gianmaria noticed how the textured glass of the bar’s antique windows rendered the figures of passersby into bursts of colour and texture. Shooting through the glass he captured images that resembled paintings and that sparked his fascination with and exploration of the material.

Journeying to the Venetian island of Murano, Gianmaria was able to access other rare forms of glass which he collected and with which he experimented to create new textures and effects in his images.

On recent travels the glass has gone with him into nature rendering the incredible landscapes of Canada and the United States into painted photographs. This work has lead Gianmaria to further explore natural light and work primarily outdoors or ‘en plein air’ with the subject as it occurs in nature as opposed to in a studio.
